SDC Session #23 will be held on April 22-23, 2008,
at the Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas in Irving, TX.
SDC Session #23 will feature presentations and break-outs on several current SDC initiatives including the Concrete Sustainability Project, the Vision 2020 Repair/Protection Council, and consideration of Building Information Modeling and its potential impact within the concrete industry.
The document on the industry’s Vision for the Sustainability of Construction with Concrete in North America will be nearing completion and the SDC will provide its members an update on this past year’s major activity within the SDC. Originally envisioned coming out of SDC Session #21 in Washington DC only 9 months ago, significant SDC and industry resources have gone into this initiative.
The Vision 2020 Repair/Protection Council will hold its annual meeting at this SDC Session. Anticipating the roll-out of a major funding plan to implement activities or accelerate the implementation of those activities outlined in Vision 2020, the Council will provide an update on accomplishments to date and near-term projects going forward.
Finally, this Spring session will focus on the issue of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and its potential in the concrete industry. BIM is a methodology for storing complete information about a building in a computer model—information that is generated, available, and used by all members of a design/construction team. Advancement in computer power and software has moved design and construction from two-dimensional computer drawings, through three-dimensional models, to a complete digital model. It is really all about information—its generation, storage, and use by building team members.
With presentations to provide information on what BIM is and isn’t, together with case studies of actual projects, the SDC will facilitate break-out sessions to allow its members to explore the impact this emerging technology will have on design and construction. From technical questions to legal questions, it is time for the concrete industry to address this issue.
