SDC Session 23 Updates
The Strategic Development Council (SDC) held its latest meeting, Session 23 in Irving, Texas, April 22-23. 53 people attended the meeting which featured presentations, break-out sessions, and a Technology Showcase. Highlights included:

Building Information Modeling
One of the main focuses during Session 23 was on Building Information Modeling (BIM). Presentations by software developers, an engineer, contractor, and fabricator provided information on BIM – what it is, its potential impact on the construction industry, and case study results. SDC has recognized BIM as an Industry Critical Technology, and Bob Risser, president of Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI), is currently championing SDC’s role in BIM. Vision 2020-Repair/Protection Council
The Vision 2020-Repair/Protection Council held its annual meeting during Session 23.

Sustainability Vision & Roadmap
SDC continues its work on its Sustainability Vision & Roadmap, and the sixth draft of the document was presented at Session 23. To obtain a copy of Draft 6, contact Doug Sordyl at douglas.sordyl@concrete.org.

Next SDC Session #24 to be Held this Fall
Mark your calendars! SDC will hold its next scheduled meeting, Session 24, Oct. 8-10, at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla. Oct. 8 and 9 from noon to noon will be devoted to an SDC strategic planning session, while Session 24 will officially begin at noon on Oct. 9, adjourning at noon on Oct. 10. SDC Sustainability Workshop a Success
During the ACI Spring 2008 Convention in Los Angeles, SDC held a sustainability workshop. Approximately 45 people attended the workshop to discuss outstanding issues, including the industry’s willingness to target CO2 emissions. An update will be given to the industry associations at the upcoming Concrete and Masonry-Related Associations (CAMRA) meeting on May 28-29 in Dallas.

Self-Consolidating Concrete Initiative to Wrap this Year
SDC’s Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) Form Pressure Research Initiative is expected to be completed this year. Final conclusions and recommendations will be presented at SDC Session 24 in Palm Harbor, Fla. this fall. For more information about SDC’s role in SCC-Form Pressure Research, click here

ACI Grants $3 Million Endowment to ACI Foundation
At ACI’s Spring 2008 Convention in Los Angeles, the ACI Board of Direction voted to approve a $3 million endowment to the ACI Foundation, whose councils include SDC, the Concrete Research Council (CRC), and the Scholarship Council. All councils, including SDC will share the funds generated by this endowment. More information about the ACI Foundation can be found by visiting www.ACIFoundation.org

ICC Evaluation Service
ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) offers product evaluations under the International Codes and other appropriate codes and standards. The primary purpose of an ICC-ES evaluation report is to provide information for those charged with enforcing building regulations to determine compliance of new and innovative products with the code. ICC-ES currently has over 1500 reports covering products regulated by the family of ICC codes. The unbiased evaluation process is geared to be responsive to regulatory and industry needs to create a level playing field between manufacturers as to ICC-ES technical requirements for code compliance. The end result is an ICC-ES evaluation report that provides users the assurance of consistency, fairness and technical accuracy. 
ICC-ES’s mission of evaluating new and innovative products compliments SDC’s goal of assisting the industry in the timely adoption of innovative technologies. ICC-ES’s background gives it a unique perspective from which it can assist the SDC in its goal of gaining acceptance of new technologies.
