Jean-Claude Roumain Innovation in Concrete Award

An award for innovation in concrete has been established by SDC in memory of Jean-Claude Roumain, a long-time SDC supporter and Executive Committee member who passed away in January 2010.

Nominations for the 2013 Award are now open. The deadline for submissions is May 31.

Guidelines

Nominees should be individuals who have met one or more of the following:

  1. Have contributed to innovative developments in concrete mixture proportioning, production of concrete, and\or concrete construction,
  2. Have contributed to the improvement in the manufacture of materials used in the production of concrete, and used existing and new materials in innovative ways to improve concrete construction and serviceability; and/or
  3. Used concrete in innovative ways to contribute to a sustainable built environment.

Award Requirements

Innovation(s) must be original as evidenced by:

a. Technical publications
or
b. Patents issued (provide patent numbers)
or
c. Innovation(s) adopted by a minimum of one mid to large size company in the industry. Provide names.
or
d. Innovations(s) have been identified by trade groups as “innovative”
and
e. Not previously published in a technical journal or trade publication by someone other than the nominee

Other Considerations

  • Innovation(s) must be economically viable (as perceived by SDC Board Members)
  • Innovation(s) should have sustainability aspects\benefits

Neal S. Berke

2012: Neal S. Berke

Neal S. Berke, FACI, is Vice President of Research at Tourney Consulting Group, LLC, in Kalamazoo, MI. He has authored or co-authored over 100 technical papers and reports, is the co-author of a book(Corrosion of Steel in Concrete), and is the co-editor of several books related to concrete durability and corrosion. He has 37 U.S. patents and several patents pending.

He is a member of ACI Committees 212, Chemical Admixtures; 222, Corrosion of Metals in Concrete; 224, Cracking; and 365, Service Life Prediction. He is a past member of the Wason Award Committee. He received the CANMET/ACI Outstanding Contributions in the Area of Corrosion Inhibitors for Use in Concrete Award in 1997. He is also a member of ASTM International and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Arezki Tagnit-Hamou

2011: Arezki Tagnit-Hamou

Arezki Tagnit-Hamou is a Full Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Université de Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, QC, Canada, where he has been since 1990. He is also Head of the Alternative Cementitious Materials Laboratory and the Director of both the Industrial Research Chair on the Valorization of Glass in Materials and Graduate Studies (Department of Civil Engineering).

An ACI Fellow, he is a past member of the ACI Advisory Board Committee on Sustainable Development. He is Co-Chair of ACI Subcommittee 130-D, Rating Systems/Sustainability Tools, and a member of the ACI Strategic Development Council (SDC) and ACI Committees 130, Sustainability of Concrete; and 555, Concrete with Recycled Materials; and ACI Subcommittees 130-A, Materials, and 130-G, Education/Certification.

2010: Jean-Claude Roumain

The ACI Foundation awarded its inaugural Jean-Claude Roumain Award for Innovation in Concrete during the ACI Fall 2010 Convention Opening Session in Pittsburgh The was given to Mr. Roumain posthumously. His wife, Marlena, and son, Claudio Ochoa, accepted the award.
