CONCRETE INDUSTRY LEADERS MEET TO DEFINE
CONCRETE’S ROLE IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Strategic Development Council brings leaders together to develop a road map to support concrete’s vision and goals on sustainable development

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (Oct. 4, 2007) - Last month, the Strategic Development Council (SDC) hosted the first of two Concrete Sustainability Road-Mapping Workshops. Over 40 concrete industry leaders representing suppliers, manufacturers, trade associations, architectural and engineering firms, contractors, and owners convened in San Diego, Calif. Sept. 22-24 to map out specific strategies to support a vision and sustainable development goals of the concrete industry. This vision evolved earlier this year when over 100 industry leaders participated in the Concrete Summit on Sustainable Development held in Washington, D.C.

During the San Diego workshop, participants had the opportunity to formulate plans that would lead the way for the concrete industry to take proactive measures in ensuring that concrete is designed, specified, produced, installed, and applied, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.

“The SDC is providing a unique opportunity for the industry to collectively define concrete’s role in sustainable development including continually improving concrete’s environmental footprint,” said Doug Sordyl, Managing Director of the SDC. “Developing a common vision and a road map of specific actions and resources needed is essential, and the diversity of the concrete industry will be beneficial in moving toward that vision.”

Participants have committed to continue their work toward developing a comprehensive roadmap. Work will continue during a second workshop scheduled for Nov. 29-30 in St. Louis, Mo. The SDC and these concrete leaders extend an invitation to others in the industry who wish to participate. For details, visit www.concreteSDC.org
